Abstract

This study entitled Flouting Maxim Performed by The Characters in The Princess Switch movie. The aimed of the research was to discover the different types of maxims that characters used in their utterances. The purpose of this research was to discover the different forms of flouting maxims using Grice maxim theory. The data for this study was gathered by observation and analysed using the descriptive qualitative method. The findings revealed that the characters used all types of flouting maxim, they are flouting maxim of quantity, flouting maxim of quality, flouting maxim of relation, and flouting maxim of manner. The result of this study showed that the types of flouting maxim found in the movie are 28 data. The most common flouting maxim found in this movie is flouting maxim of quantity which occurs 10 times (36%). The findings reveal that the most dominant flouting maxim that used by the characters is flouting maxim of quantity because the characters in this movie wants to strength their idea and convincing the listener that the information obtained provide good purpose.
