FLOUTING MAXIM IN “THE PERFECT DATE” MOVIE

Abstract

Abstract— This study aims to find out the types of flouting maxims in The Perfect Date movie. In more specific terms, this study aims to identify the types of flouting maxims that performed by the characters in the movie. Flouting maxim is an important thing to consider in making communication more effective and make the sentence acceptable for the listener. In every conversation the participant must obey the cooperative principle to avoid misunderstanding between the speaker to the listener. The data source was taken from The Perfect Date movie. The analysis is done using the theory from Grice (1975) to analyzed the types of flouting maxims that the characters in the movie flouted. The data were collected by using the observation method. Furthermore, this study used a descriptive qualitative method to analyzed the data. The result of this study shows the types of flouting maxim found in the movie are 19 data. The highest occurrence in The Perfect Date movie is flouting maxim of quantity which appeared in 10 data (52%). Then, followed by flouting maxim of quality found 3 data (16%). Next, the flouting maxim relevance found in the movie are 3 data (16%) and the flouting maxim of manner 3 data (16%).
