AN ANALYSIS OF FLOUTING MAXIM IN JANE GREEN’S NOVEL BOOKENDS

Abstract

Ths study analyzes the flouting maxim in Jane Green’s novel, Bookends. This study focuses on analyzing the types of flouting maxims and the reason for flouting maxims performed by characters in Jane Green’s novel Bookends. A descriptive qualitative method was applied in this study. The data was analyzed using Grice’s theory (1975) to identify the types of flouting maxim used by the characters in Bookends novel and Leech’s theory (1983) to find out the reason for flouting maxim in Bookends novel. As a result, all types of flouting maxims are found in Bookends novel. The most dominant was flouting the maxim of quantity which appeared three times. Meanwhile, the less dominant was flouting the maxim of quality that appeared once. The data of flouting the relation maxim and flouting the manner maxim appeared twice. The reasons for flouting the maxims are collaborative, convivial, competitive, and conflictive.
